Live notes: U.S. Open playoff
LA JOLLA, Calif. -- PGATOUR.com staff writers Mike McAllister and Helen Ross will provide continuous coverage, including hole-by-hole analysis, from Monday's playoff between Tiger Woods and Rocco Mediate at the U.S. Open (all times ET).
"I SCARED HIM": That was Rocco Mediate's comment when asked about taking Tiger Woods to 19 holes in Monday's playoff before finally losing to the world's top-ranked player. "I just about got him," he said.
Mediate, ranked 158th in the world coming into the U.S. Open, was proud of the way he dealt the pressure of facing Tiger in a one-on-one stroke play event. Mediate overcome a three-stroke deficit in the final nine holes and led going into the 18th hole before Woods tied with a birdie.
"I like the way I handled it," Mediate said.
Noted Woods: "You don't realize how much of a competitor he is. ... When he's healthy, he's a helluva player."-- (5:09 p.m.)

HOLE BY HOLE RESULTS:. (Leaderboard)
|
| First sudden-death hole: No. 7 (par 4) |
| Woods has the honor this time. Hes leaning, but the ball stays just on the right edge fairway, His approach comes up about 25 feet short of the hole on the front edge of the green. He leaves his birdie putt short, dead into the hole, and drops to his knees. He taps in and waits to see what Mediate can do. After Mediate's par putt slides by, Woods can finally hug his caddie, Steve Williams. Tiger has won the U.S. Open for a third time. Par |
| Mediates drive lands in the left fairway bunker. He frowns and slaps his leg with his cap as he walks down the fairway. He has 176 yards to the front of the green and 184 yards to the hole. Mediate pulls his shot, though, and the ball lands on the far side of the cart path about a foot from the bleachers. As the fans chant "Let's go, Roc-co, let's go, Roc-co," Mediate picks up his ball and takes his drop. His chip lands just short of the hole and rolls about 20 feet by. The par putt curls over the hole and runs on by. Mediate walks over to hug Woods.

|
| Hole 18 (par 5) |
| His drive finds the fairway, rolling past the bunkers on the right. Will there be another miracle finish? He has 217 to the hole, 198 to the front of the green. Woods hits a high cut at the center of the green and the ball lands safely. He has 40 feet for eagle. The ball slides right of the whole, and leaves him about four feet for birdie. Of course he makes it. Birdie |
| Mediate pulls his drive toward the left rough, and it finds the fairway bunker. His second shot finds the right side of the fairway, He pulled it a little, but the ball lands about 15 feet to the left of the pin. His birdie putt never had a chance, and he has two feet for par -- which becomes much more difficult after Woods makes his birdie putt. But Mediate is up to the task and we're going to sudden death. The first sudden death hole will be the 461-yard par 4 seventh. After that, it's No. 8, then No. 18. You've got to think Mediate must beat Tiger in one of the first two holes before it gets to the par-5 18th.

| Hole 17 (par 4) |
| Woods' drive finds the center of the fairway. You can tell he likes it -- he finishes off the swing with that trademark club spin. But he has lots of indecision on his second shot. He backs off of it once, then changes clubs from a 7-iron to an 8-iron. It's the right move -- the shot takes two hops on the green and stops about 30 feet from the pin. The birdie putt didn't break enough, though and stops about four inches from the hole. Par |
| His drive finds the intermediate rough, just to the right of the right fairway bunker. The ball appears to be sitting up well. His approach hits into the thick stuff beside the green but takes a fortunate left turn and stops on the front of the green about 45 feet away. His first putt stops two feet away and he makes the tester for par. Mediate is one hole away from shocking the world's top-ranked player and winning the U.S. Open.

| Hole 16 (par 3) |
| Woods tee shot stopped short, just on the edge of the green about 50 feet from the hole. His birdie putt tracks toward the hole but stops one revolution short. Par |
| Mediate is talking to his tee shot as it lands short of the green. He putts to within a foot and walks up to mark his ball, smiling and shaking his head. After Woods just barely misses rolling in his long birdie attempt, Mediate no doubt lets out a sigh of relief.

| Hole 15 (par 4) |
| This time Woods drive veers way right, crossing the cart path and landing a bunker on the right fairway. He winces as he finishes off his swing and limps slightly as he walks off the tee. Woods has 170 yards to the hole and a chute between the trees to aim at the green. The ball lands on the green and curves toward the hole, settling 12 feet away. It's a magical shot. But after Mediate birdies, Woods misses his birdie putt to fall one shot back. Par |
| His drive once again finds the fairway, and his approach lands about 25 feet right of the flag. He makes the big, swinging putt for birdie for his third consecutive birdie. That might very well turn out to be the biggest putt of his career, as he takes the lead going into the last three holes.

| Hole 14 (par 4) |
| With the tee moved up to make this par-4 drivable, Woods' tee shot veers right and settles into the rough about 10 yards short of the green. He chips a little heavy and the ball stops 12 feet from the hole. Woods birdie attempt catches the lip and spins out to the right. Par |
| His drive finds the collar of the green, stopping about 10 feet from the edge of the putting surface. After an excellent chip to a foot, he immediately taps in for his second consecutive birdie. After Woods misses his birdie putt, the playoff is now even going into the final four holes.

|
| Hole 13 (par 5) |
| His drive finds the left rough, leaving him 225 yards to the hole. His second shot finds the green to great applause and rolls to the back fringe about 45 feet from the hole. His eagle putt is on line but stops about a foot shy of the cup for birdie. Birdie |
| His drive finds the left edge of the fairway. He stands in the intermediate cut to hit his second shot, which finds the nearer of two greenside bunkers. After blasting five feet, Mediate makes the putt. It's his first birdie at this par-5 hole since the first round.

|
| Hole 12 (par 4) |
| His drive finds the right fairway bunker, 208 yards to the pin. As soon as he hits his shot out of the bunker, Woods throws his club into the sand. The ball lands in the right rough, short of the green -- the eighth one hes missed today. The ball is below his feet, and Woods chips about 18 feet short of the pin. His par putt slides to the left, leaving him a two-foot putt for his second consecutive bogey. Bogey |
| His drive lands in the middle of the fairway. With 243 yards to the pin, Mediate puts his second shot about 20 feet right of the hole. The ball doesn't turn and runs about two feet past the cup. He makes the par putt, closing the gap to one stroke.

| Hole 11 (par 3) |
| His tee shot landed in the left greenside bunker. He then blasted out about 20 feet past the hole but missed the putt for par. It's the first time in five days that Woods has suffered worse than par on this hole. Bogey |
| His 4-iron hit to the left of the pin and ran about 25 feet by. His birdie putt curled about two inches past the cup, but he still picks up a shot due to Woods' bogey.

|
|
| Hole 10 (par 4) |
| His drive landed in the right rough. All Woods could do with his second shot was chip back out into the fairway. His third shot hit about 10 feet past the hole and spun back, settling just on the fringe, about 20 feet from the hole. He made the putt to save par. Par |
| His drive found the center of the fairway. His second shot landed short of the green, about 30 feet from the hole. The chip hit into the fringe and stopped about 10 feet short of the pin. His par putt went left of the cup. Mediate may be seeing his chances slip away after two consecutive bogeys.

|
| Hole 9 (par 5) |
| His drive on the day's first par 5 found the left center of the fairway, 30 yards longer than Mediate's drive. Woods grimaced after hitting his drive, the first sign that he's feeling pain in his knee. His second shot landed in a bunker left of the green. His third shot landed in the grass between the bunker and the green. He then chipped onto the green, leaving him a long par putt that he made. Par |
| His drive found the middle of the fairway. His layup shot, however, found the rough on the right side, 108 yards to the hole. His third shot flew past the pin, leaving him a 20-foot birdie putt. He three-putted from there.
Bogey |
|
|
| Hole 8 (par 3) |
| His drive bounced once in the back of the green before burying into the bunker. His second shot ran through the green and landed near Mediate's ball in the short grass. His chip went five feet past the hole. His rolled in the bogey putt. Bogey |
| His drive came up short of the green in short grass. His chip went past the hole, leaving him four feet to save par. "Whew," Mediate said when walking off the green.

| Hole 7 (par 4) |
| Woods is looking very comfortable off the tee. His drive split the fairway, just 145 yards to the hole. Playing a draw with his approach shot, he landed 12 feet below the pin. His putt ran straight into the hole for his second consecutive birdie. Birdie |
| His drive just creeped into the first cut right of the fairway. His approach found the green far right of the pin that's in the front left. His long birdie putt came up just short.

|
|
| Hole 6 (par 4) |
| His drive landed in the fairway. His 8-iron was stiff to the pin, just six feet from the pin. He rolled in the birdie putt. So far, no signs from Woods that he's feeling any pain from his left leg. Birdie |
| His drive landed 23 yards short of Woods but found the middle of the fairway. His approach shot bounced through the green and landed on the back edge in the short rough. A nice chip that just barely caught the ridge, feeding down five feet to the pin, allowed him to save par.
Par |
|
|
| Hole 5 (par 4) |
| His drive landed in the fairway in near-perfect position, 169 yards from the hole. His second shot landed well left of the pin. His birdie putt ran just right of the pin. Par |
| His drive landed right in the fairway bunker. His second shot landed far left and hit two cart paths, due in part to his right foot slipping on his shot. Out of trampled-down rough left of the green, he managed to find the far edge of the green with his chip. His 12-foot par putt broke just left.
Bogey |
|
|
| Hole 4 (par 4) |
| His 3-wood landed in the left rough just short of Mediate's drive, 228 yards from the hole. His approach landed in the rough, just short of the left bunker. With his ball sitting up, he was able to chip to within one foot to save par. Par |
| His drive landed in the left rough, 224 yards from the hole. His approach landed on the green, well short of the pin. His long birdie putt ran three feet past. His par putt got more of the lip than he wanted but still fell in.

|
| Hole 3 (par 3) |
| His drive buried into the bunker protecting the front of the green. Unable to spin the ball, his second shot ran well past the hole. His long par putt went three feet past on the right. Bogey |
| His tee shot was dead-on and nearly rolled in for an ace, leaving him an easy birdie putt of less than two feet. A statement shot, perhaps?
Birdie |

| Hole 2 (par 4) |
| Drove into left rough, 129 yards from the pin. Approach shot was short and right of the green. His chip came up shorter than he probably expected, leaving himself an eight-foot par putt. Par |
| His drive landed in the right, 126 yards to the pin. His approach shot with a wedge landed in the rough between the green and the bunker. His third shot came up a five feet short of the pin.

| Hole 1 (par 4) |
| After struggling off the No. 1 tee all week, Tiger finally got a break. His drive hit in the rough near the right-side bunker, but bounced back in the fairway. "Finally," Tiger said with a smile. His approach shot from 154 yards landed on the green. His 20-foot birdie putt was left of the pin. Par |
| Rocco landed his drive in the fairway on the left side. His approach shot from 176 yards landed in the right-side bunker. His bunker shot ran past the hole. His 8-foot par putt missed to the left. Bogey |

DRIVABLE PAR 4 AGAIN: The USGA will be using the most forward tee on the par-4 14th, with 269 yards from the tee markers to the flagstick. It's the same tee location as in Sunday's final round. The hole location is front center.
Pertinent information on other holes:
Hole 3: 188 yards (back right tee)
Hole 6: Tee markers moved forward 14 paces (501 yards to middle) due to challenging left "bowl" hole location
Hole 8: 171 yards
Hole 11: 192 yards (back tee)
Hole 12: 505 yards
Hole 13: 539 yards (most forward of three teeing grounds used with hole location on back left shelf)
Hole 16: 225 yards (back right tee)
Hole 18: 525 yards (to middle of green) -- Mike McAllister (11:55 a.m.)
HOPE YOU CAN TELL THEM APART: Yes, we're kidding. But both Tiger Woods and Rocco Mediate will be wearing red shirts and black pants in Monday's playoff. Mediate, however, is also wearing a black sweater vest, so there you go. -- Mike McAllister (11:39 a.m.)
