Augusta House: Emotional moments

Like the majority of journalists covering the Masters this week, PGATOUR.COM's group of writers -- Melanie Hauser (MH), Mike McAllister (MM), Helen Ross (HR) and Brian Wacker (BW) -- have rented a house instead of staying in hotel rooms. So what did they talk about Thursday night? Here's a peek inside Augusta House.

MM: Gary Player is making his last appearance in a major this week. Obviously, he's going to get a nice sendoff. That makes me wonder -- what do you think has been the most emotional sendoff in golf?

BW: Has to be Jack at the British Open in '05. I wasn't even there and it was an emotional moment for me.

HR: Funny thing about that -- just a couple of hours after he finished, there were already photos of him on the Swilken Bridge that were for sale near the course.

BW: I have one of those photos.

MM: I wish I had one of the bank notes.

HR: I've got two of them. I'm planning to get a photo of Jack on the Swilken Bridge, then put it in a frame along with each side of the bank note.

BW: I also have a photo of Arnie on the Swilken Bridge.

HR: Speaking of Arnie, to me the most emotional moment was his last U.S. Open in '94 at Oakmont.

BW: I think I was about 7 at the time.

HR: Gee, thanks. I went out to the 18th and walked all the way up 18 with him, just feeling the emotion. Then he came into the interview room and he was so overcome with emotions. He kept putting his head into a towel and crying. Heck, I was crying. There were a lot of men in that room who were crying too.

BW: I wonder what Tiger's farewell will be like?

HR: I think it will be like Jack. It will be emotional for him, but he may not show it.

MM: He might surprise you. I think Tiger has shown his emotional side when it seemed appropriate, especially in 2006 at the British Open after his dad passed away.

BW: I'm not sure he's going to play as long as Jack or Arnie, though. And he may not even tell us that it's his last major until after the fact.

MM: What would be the most emotional moment this week at the Masters?

BW: Norman winning, for sure.

HR: Yeah, for both him and the crowd. When Faldo beat Greg in '96, that was an emotional moment, obviously in a totally different way. People here like Greg.

BW: He was Tiger Woods before Tiger.

MM: Jack's win in '86 has to be the most emotional win here, right?

HR: Yeah, you had patrons jumping up and down in unison, like that old Toyota commercial, when he finished at the 18th hole. It was one of those stories that you didn't think that you could do justice to. I will never forget it.
