Masters champ Cabrera earns first spot in PGA Grand Slam
Angel Cabrera did more than win the Masters on Sunday. He also punched the first ticket to the 2009 PGA Grand Slam of Golf this fall in Bermuda. Cabrera, of course, also won the 2007 PGA Grand Slam.
AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Masters champion Angel Cabrera, who captured his first Green Jacket at Augusta National Golf Club on Sunday, also claimed the first spot in the most difficult tournament for which to qualify -- the PGA Grand Slam of Golf, which will be played at Port Royal Golf Course in Bermuda on Oct. 20-21, 2009.Cabrera, 39, earned his second berth in the season-ending showcase of major champions with his playoff victory over Kenny Perry and Chad Campbell. After winning the 2007 U.S. Open at Oakmont, Cabrera also won the 2007 PGA Grand Slam of Golf -- coincidentally also in a playoff, that one over 2007 Open Championship winner Padraig Harrington.
The PGA Grand Slam of Golf is a 36-hole event broadcast by TNT to an audience of 89 million U.S. homes, along with an international audience of more than 100 countries in a prime-time telecast.
The PGA Grand Slam of Golf purse is $1.35 million, with the winner receiving $600,000; second place $300,000; third place $250,000; and fourth place $200,000.
The remaining berths in the 27th PGA Grand Slam of Golf will be determined at the U.S. Open at Bethpage Black in Farmingdale, N.Y., on June 18-21; the Open Championship at Turnberry in Ayrshire, Scotland on July 16-19; and the 91st PGA Championship at Hazeltine Golf Club in Chaska, Minn., on Aug. 13-16.
Should a player win more than one major championship this season, the foursome will be completed through the Major Champions Points List composed of past major champions who compete in the current year's majors.
PGA Grand Slam Week begins Mon., Oct. 19, with the Champions Clinic and Pro-Am. The Champions Clinic features the major Champions demonstrating various golf skills and insight on how they execute their shots.
The clinic will be televised by GOLF CHANNEL. The Pro-Am features amateur groups composed of Officials, VIPs and guests of The PGA of America, TNT and Bermuda, who play alongside the major Champions. Cameras and autographs are only allowed on Monday.
Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 20-21, are the competition days, where the limited gallery will experience the major Champions up close, as "inside-the-fairway" access will be enjoyed by all spectators.
