Groups we're watching: U.S. Open, round 3
All times are Pacific.
Stuart Appleby, Rocco Mediate
Tee time: 3 p.m.
Tee: No. 1
Total TOUR wins: 13
Why you should watch: This is an interesting final pairing for the third round of the U.S. Open. Both players are grizzled veterans who each boast at least five PGA TOUR career wins. However, none of their combined 13 wins have come in a major. Finally, Stuart Appleby and Rocco Mediate might not be in the position to shoot an even-par round here on Saturday seeing as Tiger Woods is on the prowl. It'll be interesting to see how aggressive they decide to get.

Tiger Woods, Robert Karlsson
Tee time: 2:50 p.m.
Tee: No. 1
Total TOUR wins: 64
Why you should watch: After the first round, Tiger Woods said his 1-over 72 wasn't all that bad. He just needed to clean up a few things. That's exactly what he did on Friday in the form of a 4-under 68 to pull within one shot of the lead. That's a scary proposition for the rest of the field seeing as Woods has won the last four events played at Torrey Pines. As for Karlsson, he might be new to contending in major championships, but don't expect him to be intimidated. Karlsson held his own on the winning European Ryder Cup team in 2006 and experienced those immense crowds in Ireland.

Ernie Els, Geoff Ogilvy
Tee time: 2:10 p.m.
Tee: No. 1
Total TOUR wins: 20
Why you should watch: Both players are U.S. Open champions and obviously know what it takes to win a big tournament. Ernie Els and Geoff Ogilvy were playing partners through the first two rounds this week and came out of it unscathed at even par. That means they'll start the third round just three shots off the lead. Ogilvy has been a consistent rising star, while Els is a staple on major championship leaderboards. Their combined experience should prove to be invaluable on the weekend. But will it lead to a win?
